East Brunswick recently added the Blue Envelope Program by having its Police Department partner with the Middlesex County Association of Chiefs of Police to bring the program to town.
Police Chief Frank LoSacco said the effort reflects the department’s commitment to serving the community with compassion and respect and encourages residents to pick up a free envelope at the police headquarters.
This program is designed to foster safer, more positive interactions between law enforcement officers and individuals with autism during traffic stops.
What Is the Blue Envelope Program?
The Blue Envelope Program provides autistic drivers with a distinct blue envelope to store essential documents such as their driver’s license, vehicle registration, and insurance information. Also, this envelope informs officers that the driver is on the autism spectrum and includes helpful communication tips for officers to follow during the interaction.
This helps reduce misunderstandings and promote effective communication during what can often be a stressful situation. If you have a child or family member that is diagnosed with Autism, we advise you to obtain the envelope from your county police department.
How to Get a Blue Envelope
Residents are encouraged to pick up a free Blue Envelope at the East Brunswick Police Headquarters, located at 1 Jean Walling Civic Center Drive. Participation is voluntary, and the program is available to any driver who feels it would be helpful.
Counties such as Union, Essex, Mercer, Morris, Hunterdone, Somerset, Burlington and Camden have officially launched or widely implemented the Blue Envelope initiative as of early 2026. Be sure to pick an envelope from your county police department if you need it.
