As the holiday season approaches, there is a rise in drunk driving fatalities. Every year, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reminds us that most of the deadliest driving days of the year occur between mid-December and January 1. For the past 15 years, December has ranked the highest for more than 1,000 lives lost in holiday-period crashes.
New Jersey’s 2025 Holiday Crackdown
Here in New Jersey, the holiday enforcement effort is especially strong this year. The New Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety (HTS) has awarded $703,500 in grants to 125 police departments statewide to increase patrols and conduct sobriety checkpoints through January 1, 2026, which is all part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign.
Larger cities like Newark, Paterson, Montclair, Lakewood, and New Brunswick to smaller towns across every county, are receiving funding to help departments ramp up efforts to get impaired drivers off the roads. This money will be used to support overtime patrols and dedicated checkpoints. Expect increased checkpoints on major streets like Route 35 (Old Bridge) or near Avenel (St. George Ave). Also, towns like Woodbridge, East Brunswick, and Edison.
What You Can Do
- Plan ahead and arrange for a sober ride home
- Watch for impaired drivers and and inform them to local law enforcement if you encounter a dangerous driver on the road
The Legal Consequences of a DWI in New Jersey
Beyond the very real safety risks, a DWI arrest in New Jersey carries serious and lasting legal consequences. Penalties can include significant fines, loss of driving privileges, ignition interlock requirements, and even jail time depending on blood alcohol content (BAC) and prior offenses.
During this holiday season, drivers should expect increased checkpoints, increased patrols, and zero tolerance for impaired driving. If you ever find yourself in a situation that results in a DWI, be prepared to seek legal counseling.
Our office EBM Law, has represented thousands of DWI clients in cities around the state. We provide multiple resources to understand DWIs and your rights when pulled over. For more information, check out our articles about New Jersey DWI Checkpoints: Your Rights and What You Need to Know.
