Patience: Your Key to Success While Interacting with the New Jersey Criminal Court System

EBM Law’s Commitment to Speed and Transparency

Here at the Law Offices of Eric B. Morrell, we recognize that our clients deserve the best and most timely outcomes when it comes to resolving criminal cases in the New Jersey court system. Having successfully resolved thousands of cases at the Municipal, Superior, and Appellate levels, we have learned that speed and transparency are at the top of our clients’ minds as they navigate the justice system.

In recent years, both our Offices and the State have taken steps to improve these areas for defendants. In 2022, New Jersey’s electronic case management system, eCourts, was launched statewide to allow criminal defense attorneys to submit trial exhibits electronically for Superior Court (and some municipal) cases. Additionally, the Court can make our offices aware of any changes in cases through electronic eCourts notifications. This electronic filing system has allowed our offices to deliver case-related documents to the court and our clients as soon as they become available, increasing both speed and transparency in criminal cases. Other new electronic tools, such as the MVC CAIR program and the NJSP Expungement Status Portal, allow us to electronically access our clients’ motor vehicle records and criminal expungement statuses respectfully.

Seeking to enhance our clients’ experience, EBM Law has recently re-launched our website with many innovative resources. Our Blog allows clients to stay up-to-date on the latest developments in New Jersey Criminal, DWI and Municipal court laws and how they affect our clients. Our new client portal, operated through MyCase, allows clients to keep track of important dates related to their case, share important case-related information, and communicate sensitive information with our offices all through a secure online platform. This resource allows our clients to monitor the progress of their cases in real time, limiting the need for redundant emails and phone calls.

Limitations and the Need for Patience

Though these new resources have been effective in increasing both speed and transparency in case-related communications, an unpleasant reality of our justice system is that results, especially positive ones, take time. Each year, New Jersey’s court system handles millions of cases, with over six million filed annually in municipal courts alone. At any given time slot, a single judge could have several dozen matters scheduled, including arraignments, sentencings, and status conferences. Once our offices gather the information necessary to notify the court that we are representing a new client, it can take weeks to months for an initial court appearance to occur.

As such, we urge our clients, especially those who have never before interacted with the justice system, to have patience with the processes and procedures of the court. Having some time in between court appearances can often be a blessing in disguise, allowing our Offices to develop the most effective defenses for our clients under limited time pressure. With patience and collaboration from our clients, we have delivered thousands of positive outcomes in cases ranging from DWIs to university-related Title IX incidents. If you have any questions about these new resources, or any New Jersey criminal matter, please contact our offices.
